Litter Crusade
Pick up litter and have fun with recycled materials
Materials
- art supplies
- glue
- large box
- recycled materials (bottle caps, cartons, aluminum foil, etc.)
Directions
Through clean-up and a craft project, children learn about maintaining the environment.
- Sing: Teach your children the following song to the tune of "Frére Jacques," adding appropriate gestures:
I see litter, I see litter.
Pick it up. Pick it up.
Throw it in the trashcan.
Throw it in the trashcan.
No more litter! No more litter!
- Clean: Organize a litter pickup around the house and yard. Children can sing the song as they hunt for litter.
- Decorate: Invite your children to decorate a cardboard playhouse with recycled materials. Have them glue materials to a large box, and encourage them to describe the materials as they work.
Talk About It
Ask: What is litter? Why is it important not to litter?
With a Group
Organize a community cleanup project. Check with the Department of Public Works for permission and guidelines, and then invite families to join you for a "Spruce Up Our Neighborhood" day. (Review safety concerns, such as using gloves and tools rather than bare hands, watching out for broken glass, etc.)
