Sidewalk Safety
Get smart about street safety
Materials
- art supplies (markers, tape, etc.)
- cardboard box (large)
- paper towel tube
- poster board
- ribbon (wide)
Directions
Use role-play to help your children learn about traffic safety.
- Set up: Have children help you make some props for the role-play. You could use ribbon to create a sash for a crossing guard. You could make a handheld stop sign using poster board and markers. (Use a paper towel tube for the handle.) Create a costume for a traffic light out of a cardboard box (two sides show a green light, and two sides show a red light).
- Role-play: Set up pretend streets and crosswalks in your home. You and your children can play the roles of drivers, pedestrians, a crossing guard, and a traffic light. Use your props and costumes to act out safe traffic scenes. For example: The light is turning red. Now the crossing guard is going to stop the traffic.
- Tour: Take a walk in the neighborhood with your children. Look for crosswalks, stop signs, traffic lights, etc. Talk more about appropriate safety behavior.
- Learn a rhyme: Teach a safety rhyme, and then practice crossing the street:
I stop, I look, I listen.
I stop, I look, I listen.
I stop, I look, I listen.
Before I cross the street.
Take It Further
Teach the hand signal for "stop," and then play "Simon Says" on tricycles in a safe area.
